The state bond commission has approved a $5 million grant for the new Sandy Hook Elementary school.
Governor Dannel Malloy told reporters after Wednesday's bond commission meeting that the grant is for planning and design costs for the new school, and is just another step in the recovery process for the residents of Newtown.
"The state of Connecticut joins the people of Newtown in their resolve to move forward despite the most challenging of circumstances," Malloy told reporters. "The recovery process is still very much underway, and will continue to be a priority for me long after students are attending classes in the new school."
Last legislative session, the General Assembly authorized $50 million to replace the old Sandy Hook Elementary School after Newtown residents voted to demolish it.
The new school is expected to open its doors at the start of 2016 school year.
