The state's House Judiciary committee has advanced a bill to limit the use of solitary confinement in Connecticut prisons.
The Act Concerning Isolated Confinement would codify procedures concerning solitary, would provide training for correctional staff, and require greater transparency.
State Senator Gary Winfield spoke on Tuesday in support of the bill.
"It's got an annual reporting requirement that includes a number of inmates in restrictive housing," Winfield said. "That information would be sorted by age, gender, race, disability, mental health score. It restricts sending children into restrictive housing, with some exceptions."
The measure heads now to the House of Representatives.
