The Boston Symphony Orchestra is extending the contract of its music director, who last year became the orchestra's youngest conductor in a century.The orchestra announced Monday that 36-year-old Andris Nelsons' new eight-year contract will run through 2022. It replaces the original five-year deal that began in September. The Latvia-born Nelsons previously served as music director of the Latvian National Opera and the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in England. He spoke with WAMC News in November 2014 about BSO’s 2015 season.
“It’s one of the world’s best orchestra with a great tradition,” Nelsons said. “One of the world’s best concert halls in Boston and also Tanglewood is an amazing place.”
The contract also includes a clause reflecting what the orchestra says is a "mutual desire" for a commitment beyond 2022.
Managing Director Mark Volpe calls Nelsons' first year as music director of the 134-year-old orchestra "wonderfully successful."
