Governor Signs Revitalization Legislation; Foley Criticizes Gun Control Bill
Governor Dannel Malloy was joined today by Waterbury Mayor Neil O’Leary and other state and local officials for a bill signing ceremony. The legislation implements a series of improvements to the state’s brownfield programs.
Gubernatorial Candidate Critical of State Gun Legislation
Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Foley criticized gun legislation passed in 2013 as ineffective in preventing another school shooting in Connecticut saying it contains much that has “inconvenienced law-abiding citizens.” Foley made the comments Thursday during WNPR’s “Where We Live” program. The remarks are being criticized by the Connecticut Democratic Party.
Lawmakers Urge Gun Retailers to Consider Safety Measures
As a way to reduce gun violence, some elected leaders are urging retailers to consider voluntary measures to make their stores safer. Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy joined Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty and Ron Pinciaro of Connecticut Against Gun Violence today for a news conference.The officials called on the National Retail Federation to join the bipartisan push for commonsense measures to reduce gun violence.
State Teens Drinking and Smoking Less According to CDC
Fewer Connecticut teenagers are smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol. According to a broad survey of high school students released this week by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2013, 13.5 percent of Connecticut high school students said they had smoked cigarettes in the past month. The survey showed 36.7 percent of respondents saying that they had had one drink of alcohol in the past month.
Yale Researchers Announce Goals in Study Program
Treating a lethal cancer and preventing sexually transmitted diseases are among the goals of new research projects funded by Women's Health Research at Yale. Leaders of the program have announced grants from its Pilot Project Program. Researchers plan to study treatments for endometrial cancer as well as continued development of stem-cell therapy for hypoparathyroidism.
