Yale University Adds Massive Solar Array to its West Campus

Yale University
Yale University's new solar array will generate 1.6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

Yale University has recently added 4,400 solar panels to the roof of a storage building on the school's West Campus, prompting officials to say it may be the largest solar installation in Connecticut at this time.

The New Haven Register reports the photovoltaic solar array is part of Yale's continuing efforts to make the Ivy League university more energy efficient at both its main campus in New Haven and West Campus on the Orange-West Haven border.

West Campus communications director Jon Atherton said the solar array will generate 1.6 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

The array was installed under a 20-year lease from California-based energy provider SolarCity.

Ginger Chapman, director of Yale's Office of Sustainability, said university officials are considering installing more solar panels at its School of Medicine.
