U.S. Senator Chris Murphy is condemning a radio ad that supports Republican presidential candidate Senator Ted Cruz.
The radio ad, currently running in Iowa, first criticizes Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio. The ad then says: "Ted Cruz makes things happen. After Sandy Hook, Ted Cruz stopped Obama's push for new gun control laws."
In a statement released Friday afternoon, Murphy said the ad made him want to "throw up" and "it’s sick that he thinks he’ll win votes by specifically pointing out that in the wake of 20 dead first graders, he was the face of the fight to ensure no action was taken to stop more deranged killers."
Murphy said that type of rhetoric won't play well in a general election.
The ad was produced and paid for by The Courageous Conservatives, a small super PAC supporting Cruz's campaign. According to The Washington Post, a spokesman for the super PAC said they aired the ad because they felt ads coming from other pro-Cruz super PACS were "too boring."
