The Connecticut Department of Labor is getting a $3.39 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Job-Driven National Emergency Grant program. The funds will go toward creation of an apprentice program designed to steer workers displaced from other industries into careers in manufacturing.
Malloy Pledges Millions For Common Core
Governor Dannel Malloy is pledging more than $5 million on additional training and materials and $10 million in capitol funds to provide technology upgrades necessary to carry out the Common Core standards. The new standards were approved by the state Board of Education in 2010 as part of a sweeping, nationwide effort to toughen what is taught in schools.
PURA Issues Final Tree-trimming Ruling
Connecticut regulators have issued a final ruling on tree trimming practices for the state’s utilities. The ruling by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority appears to give land owners as well as community officials more control over the tree trimming process. Trees located along the electric utilities power lines may be pruned or removed by contractors that are hired by the utilities without obtaining a permit from the municipal tree warden.
Aspirin May Reduce Pancreatic Cancer Risk
Taking aspirin may cut the risk of developing pancreatic cancer in half. According to a study by the Yale School of Public Health and the Yale Cancer Center. Pancreatic cancer is among the deadliest forms of the disease. According to the National Cancer Institute, there will be more than 46-thousand new cases in the U.S. in 2014.
Authorities Patrolling Dangerous Boating
A crackdown this weekend on people who operate their boats while drinking or using illegal drugs. The U.S. Coast Guard will be out patrolling Long Island Sound, local marine police units will patrol the shoreline and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will patrol lakes and rivers .
