Cancer Answers is hosted by Dr. Anees Chagpar, Associate Professor of Surgical Oncology and Director of The Breast Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and Dr. Francine Foss, Professor of Medical Oncology. The show features a guest cancer specialist who will share the most recent advances in cancer therapy and respond to listeners questions. Myths, facts and advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment are discussed, with a different focus eachweek. Nationally acclaimed specialists in various types of cancer research, diagnosis, and treatment discuss common misconceptions about the disease and respond to questions from the community.Listeners can submit questions to be answered on the program at canceranswers@yale.edu or by leaving a message at (888) 234-4YCC. As a resource, archived programs from 2006 through the present are available in both audio and written versions on the Yale Cancer Center website.

State Bond Commission Hears Aid Requests; Flu Cases Widespread

The State Bond Commission, along with Governor Dannel Malloy, held a meeting on Thursday. One of the items was a request from the Department of Social Services for just under $6 million to provide grants-in-aid to eight social service providers. An additional request was made for $3 million toward grants-in-aid to non-profits in Stamford, Pomfret, and Branford. 

Flu is "Widespread" in the State

Connecticut health officials said the flu is now widespread across the state. There are more than 680 confirmed cases and two deaths this season. Fairfield County has the most cases, with 239. There are 163 in New Haven. Litchfield has the fewest number of cases, with 16. The Department of Public Health reports the two people who died were over age 45.

Legislative Hearing on Child Custody Dispute Cases

Members heard testimony on Thursday about the role of guardians and attorneys for minors in any action involving parental responsibilities and the custody and care of a child. Members also heard testimony about whether the state should adopt a presumption that shared custody is in the best interest of a minor child.

Brookfield School Board Member Resigns

Gregory Beck faced numerous calls for his resignation from the Brookfield Board of Education  over controversial comments marking  a year since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings. In a Facebook tribute to the victims in December, Beck wrote that his acts of kindness would be to give ammunition to his friends for 26 days. He later apologized. Beck is facing town ethics complaints for posting the comment while employed as a local emergency dispatcher
