Once upon a time in a second term, a president used his power to go after journalists in Hartford. I could be talking about President Obama's justice department seizing AP phone records, including some from AP's Hartford office. But I could also be talking Thomas Jefferson in 1806.
Sick of Federalists and sick of Connecticut and sick of people trash talking about him, Jefferson arranged for a whole bunch if political enemies -- including two newspapers -- to be sued for seditious libel. One of the lawsuits -- the one against the Courant -- went all the way to the Supreme Court. The others were dropped, probably because one of them would have led to open court testimony about Jefferson's affair with another man's wife.
Anyway, today we talk about politics and the second-term curse, the sophomore jinx in sports, and the "difficult second album syndrome" in music.
