The Scramble: Can Another Civil War Happen In America?

Jun 12, 2017

In 2075, Florida and New Orleans are under water, South Carolina is under quarantine, and America is fighting a bloody and brutal Second American Civil War over the continued use of fossil fuels. This is where American War, a new novel by Omar El Akkad begins.

It's an eerie coincidence that the 2016 election has brought us closer to this cautionary tale about the dangers of America's increasing polarization that Omar began three years ago.  Walls and artificial boundaries can't protect us from the dangers within ourselves. Unlike many dystopian novels, this story won’t let us look away from the psychological truths within its pages. It’s too real.

Also this hour: we take a look at the Tony Awards!

GUESTS:

  • Omar El Akkad - Award-winning investigative journalist and the author of American War: A Novel
  • Terrence Mann - Actor, director, three-time Tony Award-nominee, professor of musical theater at Western Carolina University, plays Mr. Whispers in the Netflix series "Sense8," and the Artistic Director for the Connecticut Repertory Theater's Nutmeg Summer Series.
