As President Obama prepares for the State of the Union address tonight, some Democratic members of Congress are opposing one of the White House’s proposals.Democratic representatives from Virginia, Pennsylvania, Arizona and Illinois joined Connecticut Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro for a conference call Tuesday morning. They oppose the White House’s proposed trade deal with 12 Pacific Rim countries. DeLauro says Congress should not grant President Obama the authority to “fast track” the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
“In what is a secret backroom deal that help will send jobs overseas,” DeLauro said. “So we in the Congress need to be able to scrutinize all the trade deals that the administration proposes to make sure to safeguard jobs and health. With ‘fast track’ we’re unable to do it.”
President Obama is set to deliver his sixth State of the Union address at 9 o’clock. It will be carried live on WAMC.
