Welcome to a new phase in the development of The Real Life Survival Guide, as we focus our efforts on brainstorming ideas for the Guide around a single theme or "chapter". For our 51st session we gathered at the amazing Barcelona Restaurant and Wine Bar in New Haven - to talk about the chapter on "Self Care".
Our guest editors included Christine Ohlman; lead vocalist for the Saturday Night Live Band (and our beloved "Beehive Queen"), New York Times columnist Bob Tedeschi, "Super Interns" cofounder Julie Braun, and the marketing wiz behind "RadarOn", Tammy Ward.
For the past 13 years Bob Tedeschi has been a weekly technology columnist for the New York Times, and for many of those years he's also written weekly or monthly columns on other topics, including travel, mortgages, small town life and, currently, do-it-yourself home improvement.
Bob is also a high school lacrosse coach and a longtime youth basketball and lacrosse coach in Guilford, where he lives with his wife and four children (two boys, two girls), whose ages range between 10 and 23.
Julie Braun is co-founder and ½ of the Dynamic Duo of Super Interns. Super Interns teaches employers (both businesses and non-profits) how to grow successfully by utilizing interns. After working with some of the largest brands in the world like Nike, MTV, Victoria’s Secret, and Carter’s Childrenswear, Julie went out on her own to start a marketing consulting company. Julie had already worked with over 1000 interns in her career so getting more interns was second nature to her. Later, she met her business partner Michelle Demers who became the other ½ of the Dynamic Duo. Combining Michelle’s brains with Julie’s brawn, Super Interns was born!
Christine Ohlman (a/k/a "The Beehive Queen") is the current, long-time vocalist with the Saturday Night Live Band whose sixth critically-acclaimed CD with Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez, The Deep End, was honored on four national 2010 Top Ten lists.
Her latest release is 2011 concert DVD "Live Hive" (so-called after her mile-high platinum beehive hairdo). In 2012 she has appeared at both Carnegie Hall and at the 2012 Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Concert in Cleveland.
Her numerous collaborations encompass Grammmy-nominated recordings and have recently included duets with Mac Rebennack, Dion, Ian Hunter, Marshall Crenshaw, Bonnie Bramlett and The Subdudes. Mixing a fiery brand of rootsy Americana with an old-school soul music flavor, she serves up a style that's been dubbed by SIRIUS/XM's Dave Marsh "Contemporary Rock R&B."
Ohlman, who is proud to call Connecticut home, has been named a "Living Legend" by both the Hartford and New Haven Advocates.
Tammy L. Ward believes that you can have anything you want in this world simply by asking for it and believing that it is yours.
A Connecticut native with the soul of a wanderer, Tammy has recently launched RadarOn Sales & Marketing, a sponsorship marketing studio currently representing the New Haven Open at Yale pro women's tennis tournament this August and the Ladies of Laughter Tour - America's Search for the Funniest Female – starting this summer in New York City.
Barcelona Restaurant and Wine Bar is an award-winning Spanish tapas restaurant group located throughout Connecticut from the greater New York region to West Hartford and New Haven.
Barcelona was begun in 1995 by Sasa Mahr-Batuz, based on his memories of years of living in Spain and Portugal, and Andy Pforzheimer, based on his 20 years as a chef at world-famous restaurants in France, California and New York.
Beginning with a tiny, 38-seat wine bar they set out to recreate the feel and the look of an evening on the Ramblas. They worked hard and made no compromises to achieve their aims: sophisticated décor that evoked Milan, SoHo, or Rio de Janeiro. Simple, flavor-filled dishes redolent with olive oil, lemon, smoky paprika. A comprehensive list of wines by the glass from around the world, with an emphasis on the lesser-known regions of Spain and Portugal. They were guided not by any places that existed at the time, but only by what they liked, and the way they liked it.
