Potassium Iodide Pills to Be Distributed Near Millstone Nuclear Plant
Connecticut is about to receive about 1.3 million potassium iodide pills to be distributed to towns in a ten-mile emergency planning zone around Millstone Power Station in Waterford. The pills protect against radiation in a severe nuclear plant accident.
The Day of New London reports that a survey showed that one in seven households had lost track of their supplies of potassium iodide pills, also known as KI, and nearly half reported having an insufficient amount for all household members. Three-quarters said they did not know where to go in their town for more pills. The last distribution was four years ago.
Ledge Light Health District did the survey in East Lyme, Groton, Ledyard, New London, Old Lyme and Waterford. Epidemiologist Russell Melmed, said residents feel prepared for disasters.
