The town of Milford, Massachusetts will get a chance to vote today on a plan by Foxwoods to build a $1 billion resort casino. Foxwoods wants to bid for one of three casino licenses that will be issued in the Bay State next year.
Rival Mohegan Sun's bid is stalled after it lost a ballot in its proposed host community, Palmer. Foxwoods announced late last week that it had finally signed a deal with a financial backer for its plan.
Penn National Gaming said it will bankroll part of the development. The plan has faced significant local opposition from residents who believe a casino would bring more congestion and crime.
Earlier this year, Milford selectmen met with neighbors near the proposed casino site. Milford TV produced a short video documenting some of the meetings. Neighbors expressed concern about possible increased traffic; property valuation, which could drop; and possible increased crime.
