Louis Masur is Chair of the American Studies program at Trinity College, and is author of the forthcoming Lincoln’s Hundred Days: The Emancipation Proclamation and the War for the Union. It’s out on September 22nd this year - the 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s “preliminary” proclamation that freed the slaves. But his book is about those 100 days that follow - as political and social forces reacted to Lincoln’s announcement - and as the President shaped the message into a final document that stands as one of the most important in the nation’s history.
