James Baldwin's book "Fire Next Time" takes its title from a gospel song about Noah, whose warnings were not heeded by others. "God gave Noah the rainbow sign. Said it won't be water, but fire next time."
You'd think with that kind of story as part of our heritage, people would heed modern warnings to evacuate when the flood waters come. But they don't. And we're very fortunate not to be having a darker conversation today. Because notwithstanding the enormous property damage caused by yesterday's storm, it sees so far that loss of life and limb was relatively slight, despite the failure of a lot of people to obey sensible instructions.
Today on the show, Mr. Dankosky and I will be hosting more special coverage of the storm and its aftermath. We'll flash around the state, with special focus on the coastline.
