Gunfire Outside Joe Ganim's Campaign Office In Bridgeport

Bullets flew outside a campaign office of Bridgeport Democratic mayoral candidate Joe Ganim Thursday. Ganim has made reducing violence a theme of his campaign.

The candidate was not at the office at the time. There were no injuries reported.

Shortly after noon on Thursday, The Connecticut Post reported that a campaign worker's car was shot, and one of its windows was shattered. Local residents told thePostthat there are frequent shootings in the area, and they doubt the incident had anything to do with the mayoral candidate.

Bridgeport Police said witnesses reported that eight to ten shots were fired from a vehicle. A police officer who was patrolling the area also heard the shots fired, and arrived on scene shortly thereafter.

Ganim defeated incumbent Mayor Bill Finch in September to win the Democratic mayoral primary. He was mayor of Bridgeport from 1991 to 2003, and resigned after a conviction on corruption charges. Ganim served seven years in federal prison. He faces Mary-Jane Foster in the November election.

Detectives are actively investigating the shooting, and ask anyone with information to call Bridgeport Police at (203) 581-5201.
