Former Arizona U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords visited Connecticut to push for new gun control legislation designed to help domestic violence victims.
Critics of one proposal, offered by Democratic Governor Dannel Malloy during his re-election campaign, say it's duplicative and falls short of an existing law that's been on the books for 15 years.
The new legislation would require subjects of a restraining or protective order to surrender their firearms and ammunition within 24 hours of being notified of the order. Republican state Rep. Arthur O'Neill said the existing law allows police to seize guns immediately if they have a judge's warrant.
A spokesman for Giffords said the Democrat would appear at the state Capitol on Tuesday for a news conference with Malloy and Democratic legislative leaders.
From Ken Dixon's blog:
Giffords, who survived a January, 2011 assassination attempt in a Tucson incident that killed six and wounded 13, will add weight to the gun-safety issue that was the subject of a 16-and-a-half-hour public hearing last week before the Judiciary Committee. The 3:00 pm event in the Capitol, according to sources familiar with the event. will also include Merry Jackson of Oxford, who was wounded when her estranged son-in-law, ScottGellatly, allegedly invaded her home and shot her daughter, Lori Jackson, to death last May.
