Bankruptcy filings provided another hopeful economic sign for Connecticut last year. Filings in the state dropped in 2015, compared to the year before.

The number of filings fell by almost ten percent from 6,294 in 2014, to 6,968. Nationally bankruptcies also fell by a similar amount, the fifth year they've seen a downward trend. The number of bankruptcies in federal court was the lowest in any year since 2007.

Casino Site Decision Closer

The two tribes bidding to build a third casino in Connecticut said they’ll narrow down their choice of sites within the next few weeks.

The towns of Hartford, East Hartford, East Windsor and Windsor Locks have all expressed interest in hosting the new casino.

The Mashantucket Pequots and the Mohegan Tribe want to counter the possible loss of revenue from the casino that MGM is developing in downtown Springfield. The partnership is also focused on turning back any legal challenge to the third casino, or to its effect on the current compact with the state.

"We're currently working with the Governor's office and the Attorney General's office to make sure that from a legal perspective things are as airtight as possible," said Chairman of the Mashantucket Pequots, Rodney Butler.

The tribes Monday showed off their community connections, showcasing a local, family-owned business that bids on work regularly at both casinos.

Paul’s TV has been a fixture in Groton since 1980. Owner Gary Paul said two of his 12 employees have a job as a result of his casino business.

"Hopefully, going forward, this can be resolved so that there aren't businesses that just totally disappear because of the loss of revenue from the casinos," said Paul.

Connecticut Drug Maker Releases Asthma Treatment

Ridgefield drug maker Boehringer Ingelheim has gained FDA approval for a new asthma medication. Spiriva Respimat is the first inhaled medicine approved for asthma in a decade. It's a once-a-day treatment, not intended for crisis use, but to improve breathing and lessen the likelihood of flare-ups in the condition.
