The Coventry Regional Farmer’s Market has been named one of three finalists in a national competition for the best farmer’s market in the country. It’s competing with markets in Michigan and New Jersey. WNPR’s Nancy Cohen reports the state’s Agricultural Commissioner is urging residents to cast a vote for Coventry.

Coventry has the biggest farmer’s market in Connecticut with 3000 to 5000 visitors every Sunday. Surrounded by 500 acres, the market sells fresh produce, cheese and meat, pies and pickles. Steven Reviczky, Connecticut’s Commissioner of Agriculture, says it’s a lot like a country fair.

“It’s just an amazing job what they do there. The farmers who participate in the market are very enthusiastic about what they do and how they do it and they love interacting with consumers.  And I‘m wishing them well in this contest.”

The winner of the national contest wins a post and beam barn, valued at $80,000. If it wins, the Coventry Farmers Market plans to use the barn for live music, classes and other events.
