We come to rely on our communities being a certain way. A disaster can change all that.
It can take the form of a tornado. That’s what happened one year ago in Joplin Missouri - a city that was nearly wiped out - with 160 of its residents killed.
More than a week later, another large tornado surprised Springfield, Massachusetts - destroying buildings downtown, ripping out trees, and also killing three.
Some disasters don’t cause the loss of life - but can rip the heart out of a town. The Bevin Bell fire over this weekend cost the town of East Hampton a big part of its identity. Today, where we live, how communities recover from disaster.
We’ll check in on Vermont, where last year’s flooding swept away picture-postcard New England villages.
And, we’ll look back at a 1998 fired that raged through Branford center - and how that town’s bounced back.
