The Best Jazz Of 2012

http://cptv.vo.llnwd.net/o2/ypmwebcontent/Commodore%20Skahill/Colin%20McEnroe%20Show%2012-27-2012.mp3

One of my resolutions for 2013 is to pay more attention to jazz.

It's not like I ignored it in 2012, but today's show, in which we discuss some of the great jazz releases of the year, catches me a little flat-footed. Here's a listing of our panelists' favorite releases:

NOAH BAERMAN:
Wayne Escoffery –  Banishment of the Lost Spirit - (The Only Son of One)
Kris Allen – Hopewell - (Circle House)
Various Artists – The Music is the Magic (Home Gift of Music – Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief)
Joe Locke/Geoffrey Keezer – The Lost Lenore - (Signing)

Johnathan  Blake – The Eleventh Hour
Lewis Nash Quintet – The Highest Mountain
Scott McLemore – Remote Location
Linda Oh – Initial Here
40Twenty - 40Twenty
Lionel Loueke - Heritage

Jasmine Lovell-Smith’s Towering Poppies – Fortune Songs
Chano Dominguez – Flamenco Sketches
Robert Glasper – Black Radio
Kenny Garrett – Seeds From the Underground
Joel Frahm – Live at Smalls

JEN ALLEN:
Matt WIlson Arts and Crafts - Poster Boy (An Attitude for Gratitude)
New Jazz Workshop - Get On the Bus - (Underground)
Nat Reeves- Laverne Walk - (State of Emergency)
Jason Palmer - Inside Your Love (Take a Little Trip)

Brad Mehldau- Where do You Start
Kenny Garrett- Seeds from the Underground
Christian McBride - Conversations with Christian
Dezron Douglas- Live at Smalls
Julian Shore- Filaments
Sharp Radway - Hymns and Things

GENE SEYMOUR:
Luciana Souza - Dindi - (Duos III)
Vijay Iyer - Human Nature (Trio Extension) - (Accelerando)
Ron Miles - Bruise - (Quiver)
Fred Hersch Trio - The Wind / Moon and Sand - (Alive at the Vanguard)
Ravi Coltrane - Spring & Hudson - (Spirit Fiction)

(Mr. Dankosky is the jazz expert around here, not me. But I have this charming naivete that allows me, I believe, to be a helpful conduit between today's expert guests and you, the non-expert listener.)

There is no excuse for not digging jazz if you live in Hartford where the jazz scene, sired by greats like Jackie McLean and Paul Brown and fueled by the amazing West Hartford public school jazz program, is all out of proportion to the size of the city and even to the rest of its arts ecosystem.

I don't know what else to say because, as I pointed out, I'm only a demi sh-boom ahead of the rest of you.
