Andrew Roraback is the Republican nominee for the open Congressional seat in the 5th District...and he’s a bit stuck.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has been trying to paint him as a Tea Partier in an ad campaign, which is something Roraback denies. He denies it so loudly in fact that a leading Tea Party activist is upset with the candidate for “walking away” from the party base.
During an appearance on WNPR's Where We Live, Roraback continued to say he is an independent voice. "I'm not someone who's going to bow to the pressure of anyone," said Roraback. "I am a Roraback Republican."
Roraback spoke about environmental issues as well, specifically around the controversial Keystone Pipeline, which he supports. "I think we could all take some comfort from knowing that half a million barrels of oil a day are flowing through this country and available to fill our needs in the case of an emergency," said Roraback.
He also addressed a caller's question about federal tax subsidies for oil companies. Roraback said he needed more information about the use of these subsidies. "I think obviously, oil companies appear to be doing well and if taxpayers are subsidizing them, we need to look at the ways in which they may be subsidizing them and does it make sense?"
Roraback continued to affirm that he has not and will not sign Grover Norquist's pledge to not raise any taxes. But he does not think that "tax increases on those that are in the best position to create jobs is the wrong public policy."
