Aetna Reportedly In Takeover Talks With CVS

Pharmacy chain CVS is said to be in talks to buy Aetna, the Hartford-based health insurer. Neither side has publicly confirmed the negotiations, which were first reported in the Wall Street Journal.

Any such deal could be worth more than $60 billion, which would make it one of the largest ever mergers in the healthcare industry.

Aetna was founded in Hartford, and has been based in the city for more than a hundred years. Earlier this year, it announced its intention to move its headquarters staff to New York.

There’s little sense of what any takeover by Rhode Island-based CVS might mean for Aetna’s thousands of Connecticut-based employees.

Aetna earlier this year was blocked by federal anti trust regulators from merging with fellow health insurer Humana.
