New Programs On WNPR

For intrepid food lovers and music explorers – WNPR has prepared a feast to feed your ears in the new year.

FRIDAYS:

Beginning Friday, January 5at 9:00 pm we will premiere Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street Radio. From street food in Thailand to a bakery in a Syrian refugee camp to how one scientist uses state of the art pollen analysis to track the origins of honey (and also to solve cold murder cases), Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street Radio goes anywhere and everywhere to ask questions and get answers about cooking, food, culture, wine, farming, restaurants, literature, and the lives and cultures of the people who grow, produce, and create the food we eat.

The cast of contributors includes Sara Moulton (long-time public television host and cookbook author), Adam Gopnik (contributing writer for The New Yorker), Stephen Meuse (wine writer and expert), Dan Pashman (host of The Sporkful podcast) and host Christopher Kimball (founder of Cook’s Magazine).

SATURDAYS:

Saturday nights will now offer a musical and cultural journey that spans the globe.

Beginning at 6:00 pm, Live from Here with Chris Thile is a Saturday-night destination for audiences everywhere. This variety show features a unique blend of musical performances, comedy and audience interaction. Acclaimed musician and songwriter Chris Thile welcomes a wide range of well-known and up-and-coming talent to share the stage and create a beautiful listening experience. Live from Here repeats on WNPR Sundays at 9:00 pm.

At 8:00 pm we bring you All Songs Considered, NPR's guide to discovering new music. Every week, host Bob Boilen and producer Robin Hilton go through hundreds of new CDs to find music that's worth getting excited about, whether it's the latest Swedish pop band, a hip hop artist going ambient, or a singer-songwriter with a twisted new take on love.

At 8:30 pm, Alt.Latino introduces listeners to new alternative Latin music, including diverse genres such as cumbia, Mexican garage rock, Panamanian rap, heavy metal mariachi, and many more boundary-blurring sounds from around the world. In addition to music, Alt.Latino features interviews and insightful conversation about Latin events and culture.

At 9:00 pm Jazz Night in America, hosted by Christian McBride, presents the uniquely American art form through storytelling around amazing concert performances including the artists, the venues, the fans, and the larger dynamics at play.

At 10:00 pm we present Sound Opinions, your source for smart and engaging music criticism and conversation. Each week on the show, nationally respected rock critics Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis interview artists, talk about pop culture and music industry news, review new record releases, and give trends a historical context. And because on Sound Opinions, “everyone's a critic,” listeners are invited to join in the debate.

And at 11:00 pm we offer Afropop Worldwide. Experience the rich, musical sounds of Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas in a lively blend of music, interviews, and stories.
